Composer's Note:
These three short songs were composed in 1996 for a theatre production set in the Tudor period. The first is a rollicking and bawdy wedding song to a text by Walter Scot, marking the marriage of Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn in 1533. The remaining two are settings of texts attributed to Henry VIII himself: ‘As the Holly Groweth Green’, a simple love song, is reminiscent of a lilting and meditative pastorale; while ‘Pastime with Good Company’ returns to the boisterous world of the opening, the text extolling the virtues of hunting, singing, and dancing, all better still when in ‘good company’.
